San Miguel de Allende
Not all cultural travel is about seeing, viewing, listening. Some of it is about doing.
There aren't many museums in San Miguel de Allende, a colonial town above Mexico City, but as a place to create art New York Magazine recently described it as "the closest thing Mexico has to Florence." Renowned for the quality of its light and for its dozens of galleries and art schools, it's a magnet for artists and for creative senior travelers in search of the perfect place to paint, sculpt, pot, blow glass, make jewelry, you name it.
The town is an ideal place to study art as well. If you have time for a longer vacation, a perk of being a senior traveler, continuing education classes are available at the Instituto Allende in a wide range of disciplines, including batik, ceramics, drawing, textiles and fiber art, jewelry, multimedia, painting, photography, sculpture and stained glass.
Popularity with North Americans and big expat community, ensure that most classes are available in English as well as Spanish.
